President should not decide which vaccine to administer: Rajitha

01 Apr 2021

With regard to the arrival of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Rajitha Senarathne today stated that the President should not be the one to decide which vaccines are to be administered to the public. He stated that the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) had appointed a technical committee of experts to research on all vaccines and they had deemed the vaccine not suitable for Sri Lanka’s vaccination drive. “There is not enough information on the Chinese vaccine, and our officials have stated that it is not suitable for use. So why is our President importing such vaccines? Even in Myanmar, the President is not the one who decides which vaccine should be given to citizens,” he stated. Senarathne also accused the NMRA of approving the vaccines for emergency use because the consignment was a donation. “The NMRA gave approval for emergency use of the vaccine because it was donated. If someone sends us poison for free, will we use that as well?” he stated at a news briefing held by the SJB today.
