COP27: President to visit Egypt

   President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt next month, The Sunday Morning learns. A senior Government source told The Sunday Morning that climate change had been a big driving factor of the President’s economic policy with emphasis placed on a green transition of the economy, which is expected to see the creation of new jobs and industries, as well as a greater reliance on renewable and green energy.  “The President is currently in the process of establishing a Climate Change Secretariat under the President’s Office, which will be tasked with overseeing the Government’s climate change agenda,” the source said. The President has engaged the services of former President of the Maldives and current Speaker Mohamed Nasheed as well as former Minister of Environment and Climate of Norway Erik Solheim. The President’s Senior Advisor on Environment Ruwan Wijewardene is also expected to accompany the President. COP27 is to commence on 6 November and conclude on 18 November.
