Voter turnout of 80% at Presidential polls: EC

The Elections Commissioner-General, Saman Sri Rathnayake said the overall voter turnout at today’s presidential election was approximately 80%.

People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL)  Executive Director  Rohana Hettiarachchi said the overall voter turnout was between 82-85%.

Hettiarachchi added that the presidential election was a ‘peaceful’ one compared to past elections.

The election of the 7th Executive President of Sri Lanka commenced at 7.00 a.m this morning and concluded at 5 pm today.

A record number of 35 presidential candidates contested today’s election.

15,992,096 citizens were eligible to vote at 12845 polling centers island-wide.
