Prestantia Music School Sing-along to raise funds

The junior choir of Prestantia Music School in Moratuwa emerged the gold medalist at the Interkultur Asia Pacific Choir Games in 2017, second only to the Russian choir which ranks second in the world. Consisting of children from around the ages of seven to19, the choir was formed by Dr. Priyeshni Pieris-Perera with the intention of competing for the Asia Pacific Choir Games. The choir is conducted by Dr. PierisPerera and Wasantha Kumara Geekiyanage.

Although a very young choir, they have quite a bit of accolades received in the past two years. At the recent Asia Pacific Choir Games, they were qualified to compete at the finals of the World Choir Games in 2020. Following this, they toured Chengdu, China on an invitation to the Chengdu Children’s Music Festival in August 2018. They’re now preparing to compete at World Choir Games in Flanders, Belgium scheduled to be held in July 2020. In hope of raising funds for their participation at the World Choir Games, Prestantia Music School is organising a Christmas singalong.

I started my journey at Prestantia Music School in 2013. Since then, I learned many things that I couldn’t have learned from anywhere else. Few years later, we began practising for the Asia Pacific Choir Games. Dr. Priyeshni trained us hard and effectively without making us feel the pressure. One year later, we started to practise for the World Choir Games where all the choirs in the world fight for their place. For World Choir Games, Dr. Priyeshni gave us all of her time and put a lot of effort to train us. We do as we are told to – to work like a team as a family and make our name stand strong as “Prestantia Music School, Sri Lanka!”

World Choir Games 2020! Just the idea of me taking part in it makes me wonder how blessed I am. In 2017, we emerged gold medallists at the Asia Pacific Choir Games. I thought things couldn’t get any better than this, but in fact, it led us to our first tour abroad in China. Then, we kept on growing until we reached a level of confidence to participate at this prestigious event. At the moment, our little Prestants are pushing their limits in terms of singing, discipline, and teamwork under the guidance of our Director Dr. Priyeshini Perera. We certainly have come a long way as a choir, and what we are about to achieve is the pinnacle of every chorister’s dream. We as the Prestantia junior choir hope to bring glory and fame to our motherland at WCG 2020!

The first thing I would like to hear on a Saturday afternoon is: “Time for music school!” Presta has literally become my second home. I joined Prestantia six years ago, and the most magical thing I learned was that “music is a language only a few can understand”. I thank my dear mentor Dr. Preyeshni for teaching me that special language. She taught each of us with special attention whenever she could and that’s what brought me here; all my awards are because of her and Mr. Wasantha Geekiyanage.

It’s true that an amazing music teacher is hard to find and impossible to forget, and I am so lucky that I have found one finally. It’s none other than our beloved teacher Dr. Priyeshini.

It was only a few years ago that I started music as an aesthetic subject at Prestantia Music School. At first, I never thought I would achieve anything from it, but now, it has played a huge role in making me who I am today. When the Prestantia junior choir participated in the Asia Pacific Choir Games in 2017, personally it was one of the greatest events I’ve ever had the privilege to participate in. Now we are well on our way to participate in the World Choir Games 2020. My journey as a Prestantian has only been possible through numerous hardships and countless hours of practice, making these experiences priceless and incomparable. Yet, the journey is far from over and I am very excited for the destination.

I was fortunate to get selected for the World Choir Games, which will be held in Belgium in 2020. I’m excited to meet people from around the world and I’m extremely proud to be representing Sri Lanka. This opportunity will not be possible without Prestantia Music School directed by Dr. Priyeshni PeirisPerera who has always guided us. We have learned to work as a team and face many challenges. I’m looking forward to the event where I’m sure we will get a very good ranking for our country.

I am excited about going to Belgium in 2020 for the World Choir Games. We train every week in preparation. Being in the Presta choir since it was formed in 2017 has been nothing short of an adventure with a lot of learning too. Winning a gold medal at APCG in 2017 was an incredible experience and I can’t wait to see how WCG will turn out!

I joined Prestantia Music School back in 2014 when I discovered I had a passion for singing. Since then, I was able to improve my talent under the constant guidance of Dr. Priyeshni and the teachers, as we were given many opportunities to participate in various competitions including the Asia Pacific Choir Games, which was a great hit for us. Currently, we are practising for the World Choir Games which will happen in 2020 in Belgium, which we are very excited about. It is indeed another great opportunity given to us.

Music is the greatest communication in the world. Even if people don’t understand the language you’re singing in, they still know good music when they hear it. I joined Prestantia Music School and have been with it since its inception, learning piano and voice under Dr. Priyeshni Peiris-Perera and Mr. Wasantha Geekiyanaga. I am proud of everything I have achieved so far. Even though I joined the Prestantia junior choir in 2017, I feel like I have been a part of it for years. Joining the choir has given me an opportunity to show my talents and also taught me to work as a team, discipline, and obedience.
