Prez. Secretariat seeks Gamlath’s resignation

06 Oct 2019

The Presidential Secretariat is expecting the resignation of former Solicitor General (SG) and incumbent Chairman of the National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crimes and Witnesses Dr. Suhada Gamlath, the Presidential Secretariat told The Sunday Morning. President’s Secretary Udaya Seneviratne told The Sunday Morning that Dr. Gamlath had informed him on Friday (4) that he would tender his resignation. However, Seneviratne said that he had not yet received the resignation letter. “If he fails to do so, we will have to take necessary action,” Seneviratne said. Gamlath’s resignation was sought after comments he had made to our sister newspaper Aruna last week, created controversy. Gamlath had claimed in the newspaper interview that the Government had pressured the Attorney General’s (AG) Department to pursue cases against former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorala had said later that as a government employee, and especially as the Chairman of Sri Lanka’s National Authority for the Protection of Witnesses and Victims, Gamlath could not make such comments to the media no matter what his political affiliations were.
