The Government is to take over the printing of national identification cards (IDs) and passports with the intention of providing the service to foreign nations.

Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella said that the initiative would follow international standards.

“In most other counties printing and minting is done by the Government. We too will begin this and meet international standards,” the Minister noted.

He said that it would also help maintain security measures.

“This will help ensure that security protocols, especially for passports, will be met.”

He said that thereafter, the Government could look to bid to print foreign passports as well.

“Once we have met the international standards, we can provide the printing service to foreign nations as well to print their passports, etc.”
