10 Aug 2020

By Sarah Hannan The Department of Prisons is preparing to reinforce the perimeter fences at the Welikada Prison by raising their height to at least 15 feet, The Morning learnt. Commissioner of Prisons (Administration and Rehabilitation) Chandana Ekanayake, in a media statement, noted that the initiative was taken to prevent contraband from being hurled over the wall of the female ward at the Welikada Prison. “Illegal substances, mobile phones, and accessories have been constantly thrown at the prison’s female ward for some time now,” Ekanayaka said. More than 10 people were arrested for hurling parcels containing drugs, mobile phones, and other illegal items over the wall of the female ward at the Welikada Prison. The Department of Prisons said that an operation is underway to arrest individuals engaged in such practices, and the assistance of Sri Lanka Police will be obtained for this purpose.
