An investigation has been launched into the Welikada prison incident where some female inmates clashed with authorities.
A clash erupted at the Welikada prison last evening resulting in some female inmates and prison officers sustaining injuries.
The Prisons Department said that 52 inmates of the prison were transferred to other prisons during the tense situation.
The situation arose when a group of female inmates launched a protest on the prison roof.
The women began to throw roof tiles at the prison guards during the protest.
A clash later erupted and during the clash, eight prison officers and three female prisoners were injured.
