Heavy police presence on Pengiriwatte Road in Mirihana
A peaceful protest that had begun last evening (31 March) at Jubilee Post in Nugegoda had turned boisterous as the night went on with protestors attempting to reach President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence on Pengiriwatte Road in Mirihana.The protestors were demanding solutions for the rising cost of living, the gas and fuel shortages, and the electricity crisis, with many holding boards criticising the Government and President. Police were deployed to stop the protestors proceeding further, and had set up metal barriers. One of the barriers was toppled by the collective push forward by the protestors.The Police ultimately used tear gas and water canons in an attempt to disperse the crowd.Heavy traffic in the area was reported due to the protest.
