Public service a burden: TUs clap back at Basil’s statements

15 Nov 2021

Responding to recent statements made by Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa which detailed that the public service of the country has become a burden to the Government, Sri Lanka Government Officer’s Trade Union Association said that it was the Government of the Finance Minister that turned the service into a burden. Such statements were expressed at a media briefing yesterday (14). “The Finance Minister has said that public service employees are a burden to this country. We wish to say that when the tsunami struck our country and whenever there were natural disasters like floods, it was always the public officers and not politicians who came forward to help the country. We must clearly state that it was the Government who transformed the public service into a burden,” Sri Lanka Government Officer’s Trade Union Association President Sumith Kodikara said. He opined that this took place as the Government of the Finance Minister expanded the workforce of the public service from 700,000 to 1.9 million to achieve their political objectives, and therefore, it is politicians who have become a burden to the country and not the public service.  Kodikara also urged for the granting of relief to Public service employees before the Budget is passed.
