PUCSL urged to reform LPG/electricity sectors

07 Dec 2021

BY Pamodi Waravita The Foundation for People’s Rights Protection (FPRP) wrote to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) yesterday (6), requesting that the PUCSL focus on reforming the regulations surrounding liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and the electricity sectors in Sri Lanka. “The public were heavily inconvenienced due to the islandwide power outage on 3 December. This occurred on the day that the country’s LPG suppliers announced that they would halt supplies to the market, over allegations regarding the safety of their products. The PUCSL, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), and the relevant Ministries related to the energy sector all have duties in regulating the industries properly to ensure that consumers are not inconvenienced and that they are protected. We request that you be aware of these facts and work for the betterment of the consumers,” the letter by FPRP National Organiser Asela Sampath and its Media Director Chirantha Amerasinghe said. They pointed out that due to the said power outage, the banking system and the telecommunications system were also affected as they were not prepared for it. “The allegations against the LPG suppliers show us that there are issues surrounding their standards and quality.” PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said last week that the PUCSL is prepared to regulate the LPG industry as it has already formulated a standard for it in September this year, including a new standard for the maximum percentage of propane that can be used in domestic LPG.
