Claims removal of title an unlawful violation of contractual agreement
BY Dinitha Rathnayake A letter has been sent to the “Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World” beauty pageant National Director Chandimal Jayasinghe on 14 March by the lawyers of former 2021 Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World Pushpika De Silva. The letter stated that De Silva denies several allegations made in a letter which was released by Jayasinghe on 8 February. In the letter, Jayasinghe stated that the recent controversy surrounding De Silva has taken a toll not only in the local sphere but also before the international community, thus jeopardising the reputation of Sri Lanka globally. De Silva’s conduct “is in serious violation of the discipline and ethical standards expected of a beauty queen or most significantly from an ambassador representing one’s own country in any capacity, whether local or international”, claimed Jayasinghe. Therefore, in the statement, Jayasinghe noted that following the mandate conferred upon him as the said National Director, the 2021 Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World title which was given to De Silva on 4 April, 2021, is henceforth removed.“The title being used or exploited henceforth by De Silva as the Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World and/or the 2021 Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World in any capacity and in any given occasion, locally or internationally, would be in violation of the rules and regulations of the Mrs. World pageant and would therefore incur legal liability and/or any other fine/compensation related thereto,” the statement added. However, De Silva has informed Jayasinghe that the agreement signed by both parties on 31 January 2021 is only valid till 30 January 2022 and that therefore, there is no right to interfere with the title and that there is no right to publish that her title has been removed. It also said that lawfully she continues to be the titleholder of Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World 2021.
