Question Yahapalanaya about Port dealings says Abeygunawardene

10 Sep 2021

Condemning former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for the decisions made over the Colombo Port when he was in office, Minister of Ports and Shipping Rohitha Abeygunawardene stated that questions relating to whether leases with regard to the Colombo Port will bring in US Dollars should be directed to the previous Yahapalanaya Government. He made these statements while responding to questions from journalists, while adding that if the Yahapalanaya Government is presented with such questions, “they would not be able to even keep their clothes on,” Abeygunawardene went on to say that assigning container terminals to different companies to build, operate and transfer would not change anything. He also said that the current Government seeks to build factories around the vicinity of the Port. When posed with another question asking if the Government has any plans to re-acquire the Port, Abeywardene replied rhetorically and explained that such a situation is like “if a father of a household has sold all the assets which rightfully belongs to his children, and is now trying to get them back,” implying that it would be impossible to to re-acquire the Port.
