Rajapaksa wants to retire again?

24 Feb 2022

  • Protestors’ say we want you, but the batter says I need to go!
By Revatha S. Silva What a paradox? The fans want him back, the Sports Minister too requested him to reverse his decision to retire, and agitated fans requested on the Colombo streets the player must be included in the National team denouncing the new fitness tests, imposed by the authorities, which caused the dasher to quit National duty and find salvage instead in profit-oriented overseas franchise leagues. In spite of growing demand from his followers to see him back in the Sri Lanka white-ball team, HE doesn’t want to do so. This The Morning Sports understands as the current Bhanuka Rajapaksa paradox! Want to retire again “By reversing his decision to retire (last month), Bhanuka has put himself in an absolute dilemma. Had he retired, he could have at least played in the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) which had already listed him for this season. Now, it’s nor here nor there,” an Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) source told The Morning Sports on the condition of anonymity yesterday (24). “I think what he wants now is to talk with the board (Sri Lanka Cricket or SLC) and retire again peacefully and get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to at least play in the remaining leagues of the year. Surely he is in demand for any world league as he has been already bought by the IPL (Indian Premier League) which is the biggest of the lot,” he argued. SLC’s hard stance Current stringent SLC rules require retiring players to wait a further six months from the date of their retirement to get SLC NOCs to play outside leagues. SLC announced suddenly new guidelines early last month, after a couple of its contracted players including Rajapaksa announced international retirement, requiring the players “to (I) provide SLC with three months’ notice of their intention to retire, (Il) a six-month waiting period post-retirement in order to obtain an NOC to play in overseas franchise tournaments, and (III) the need to play in at least 80% of domestic matches in a season if they are to be eligible for the Lanka Premier League (LPL).” SLC having the upperhand  Rajapaksa has, amidst the ongoing fitness hullabaloo, could have been compelled to retire again but the SLC can block him from playing in any league for six months. The first half of the year is packed with various international franchise leagues and the batter seems to be understandably planning to play whatever league he is to join. He announced his retirement on 5 January but after a meeting with the Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa reversed the decision on 13 January. Re-announcing retirement won’t be a wise move on his part because it won’t anyway serve his purpose as SLC can still stop him from playing in any league for the coming six months. Fans are fooled  “It’s absolutely hilarious that people want the player back in the team because his interest seems to be something else. The modern player has various other options than playing for the country. The players’ motive is naturally to earn as much as possible before their playing days are over,” the source further explained. “Fans are fooled. They are worshiping heroes who no longer have any obligation towards them.”
