The Nawa Sinhale National Organisation lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) against a number of politicians, including Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, alleging excessive spending in their election campaigns.
Speaking to The Morning on 7 January, a member of the said organisation, Dan Priyasad, said that Ramanayake’s name was in the complaint along with seven other politicians, claiming that Ramanayake was involved in alleged malpractices that occurred at Edirisinghe Trust Investments (ETI) Holdings.
“I have evidence to prove that eight politicians who took part in a recent election misused public money. I will make these accusations at a media briefing. The relevant officials have to take action,” he further claimed.
However, when questioned by The Morning, Ramanayake refuted the allegations.
“Priyasad himself came and asked for money from me. He has also taken money from me when he came to watch my movie ‘Dr. Nawariyan’. I have recordings to prove this,” said Ramanayake.
“I was not involved in any of the production work at EAP,” he further claimed.
The ETI organisation is presently embroiled in a legal quagmire over financial impropriety. Four former Directors of ETI Finance Ltd. – Jeewaka Edirisinghe, Anjali Edirisinghe, Asanka Edirisinghe, and Nalaka Edirisinghe – have been remanded till 12 January, after being arrested last week by the Criminal Investigation Department on the directive of Attorney General Dappula de Livera, on charges of criminal misappropriation, fraud, money laundering, and other offences at ETI Finance.
