  • Cites conditional nature of Prez pardon and focus on film/music career, travel
BY Safrah Fazal Former MP Ranjan Ramanayake, who was granted a conditional Presidential pardon and thus released from imprisonment on 26 August, told The Morning that he had not accepted the position of goodwill ambassador to oversee the welfare and promotion of migrant workers which was offered to him by Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara on the day of his release. “Since I received a conditional pardon, I feel that I cannot take up the position as of yet. I am currently staying at Nanayakkara’s house because I don’t have a place to live. I humbly told him that I cannot accept the position. “I don’t have an income at the moment, so I told Nanayakkara that until I get everything settled and since I just got out of prison, I will wait a bit longer before taking up any position. I told him that I will be focusing on my musical shows, movies, and tours for now. Since I was in prison for one year and seven months, I told him that I need some time to travel a bit and relax.” Speaking further, he said that he will, however, continue to help migrant workers as he had done in the past.  “However, I will still continue to help migrant workers in the Middle East. I’ve helped them even before I became an actor, so I will continue to help them regardless of any position.” In a tweet on 26 August, Nanayakkara said that Ramanayake had accepted the position of goodwill ambassador to promote the welfare of migrant workers. He stated that it was a voluntary position to make use of Ramanayake’s tacit knowledge in the area of foreign employment.
