25 Mar 2021

The Court of Appeal is to make an order on 31 March with regard to the issuance of notices to the respondents named in the writ petition filed by incarcerated Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake, seeking an injunction order preventing him from losing his seat in Parliament.  The two Judge bench comprising President of the Court, Justice Arjuna Obeyesekere and Justice Mayadunne Corea heard the writ petition over the last three days.  Ramanayake’s Counsel, Suren Fernando informed the Court that it will be three months on 8 April since the Supreme Court sentenced his client to four years of rigorous imprisonment for contempt of court, and therefore requested the Court of Appeal to issue an injunction order before that date.
