Re-opening airports amidst Covid-19: Tourist Police to step up to the plate

17 Jan 2021

As the country gears to reopen airports for tourists from 21 January onwards, the Sri Lanka Tourist Police has taken measures to ensure that their services will be conveniently accessible to any distressed tourist visiting Sri Lanka.  Following a meeting with the Sri Lanka Tourist Development Authority (SLTDA) on 15 January, Sri Lanka Tourist Police Director SSP K.A. Kavinda Piyasekara told The Sunday Morning: “We are periodically conducting meetings with the state authorities and the healthcare services in order to revise the Covid-19 health guidelines we are following. On 15 January, we also had a meeting with The Hotel Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) in order to provide them with the necessary information on keeping our communication lines open when the need arises.”  SSP Piyasekara further revealed that all police personnel attached to the Tourist Police Unit have been given the necessary instructions on the updated health guidelines and have been instructed on the usage of personal protective equipment and other preventive measures to ensure that they do not contract the virus while on duty.  “We have distributed leaflets in tourist hotspot areas where we have included the health guidelines that they should follow when engaging in tourism-related business activities and have also shared our contact details with them to reach out in case any of the foreigners are found to be in urgent need of police assistance,” SSP Piyasekara added.  In addition, all officers have been strictly advised to follow the health guidelines that would be issued from time to time by the Ministry of Health.
