Records shattered at National Weightlifting Championships

Dilanka Isuru Kumara managed to make two new Sri Lankan records last Friday (11) by displaying outstanding skills in the National Championship Weightlifting Tournament which is currently underway at the National Sports Complex in Polonnaruwa Gallalella, with another new Sri Lankan record set last Saturday (12) by Indika Chaturanga Dissanayake.  Both these athletes were medallists in the Commonwealth Games. Dilanka Isuru Kumara, who competed in the weight class below 55 kg, managed to claim two new records by lifting 116 kg in the snatch method and 257 kg in total weight. The previous Sri Lankan record of 141 kg in the clean and jerk method was tied. The weight lifted by the gold medallist in the below 55 kg category in the 2022 Commonwealth Games was 256 kg. It is important to notice that Dilanka Isuru Kumar managed to exceed that weight and recorded a total weight of 257 kg in this tournament. Indika Chaturanga Dissanayake, who represented the weight class below 73 kg, managed to create a new Sri Lankan record by lifting 135 kg using the snatch method. Indika Dissanayake was able to break the record set by lifting 134 kg in the world championship held in Uzbekistan in 2019. Indika Dissanayake, who was able to lift 161 kg with the clean and jerk method, recorded a total weight of 296 kg.
