Reports on infertility due to COVID vaccine false: Professor Malavige

08 Mar 2021

The reports circulating on social media saying that the COVID-19 vaccine leads to infertility are false and there is no evidence to support this, Professor Neelika Malavige said. Professor Malavige of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, stated that there were several false reports on social media about the consequences of using the COVID vaccine and none of them were true. With regard to ailments after the dosage, she stated, “We have all been vaccinated against several diseases as infants. Parents of infants already know that when they are administered vaccines, they stay in distress for a short period of time. That is because every vaccine causes fever and pains in the limbs for a while. However, if the fever is prominent after 3 days following the administration of the vaccine, it is advisable to visit a doctor.” She also stated that consuming alcohol or smoking does not hinder the effects of the vaccine at all. “As medical officers we do not condone the usage of alcohol or smoking. However, it is a fact that the COVID vaccine is not affected by them. But we must also advise that regular smokers are more prone to the virus and the effect of the virus on them is worse than others.”
