Rice to be imported from China: SJB says Chinese rice packed with chemicals

The rice cultivated in China is brimming with chemical fertilisers and this is what we are going to receive into Sri Lanka said Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Rohini Kumari Wijerathna.

She made this statement while speaking in Parliament today (20).

“People might know this by now, but the rich people in China eat rice from supermarkets that import organic rice or rice cultivated with lesser chemicals. This imported rice is from Japan. This is because the soil in China is so polluted and packed with chemicals. Not even the people in China want to consume their own produce. This is the same chemical packed rice that will be sent to Sri Lanka soon,” said Wijerathna.

She further added that by receiving this donation from China, the President and Government is contradicting their own policies and promise to ensure people in Sri Lanka does not consumer chemically cultivated food.

Earlier this week, The Government of China had committed to donate 1 million metric tonnes of rice to Sri Lanka, and the consignment is expected to arrive on the island in March.

China is making the donation to mark the 70th anniversary of the Rubber-Rice Pact signed between the two countries in 1952.
