Rohitha’s hotel goes to Parliament

04 Sep 2022

The controversial Eco Lodge Hotel bordering the Sinharaja forest, which is co-owned by former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s youngest son – Rohitha Rajapaksa – has become a much-discussed topic among the public as well as political circles. The main question posed by all is how the young Rajapaksa, who has no record of being officially employed, possesses the money to invest in such a hotel project. Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara raised the issue of the funds to set up this hotel in Parliament last week. “From where did son Chi Chi (Rohitha) find the money to put up such a hotel in Sinharaja?” Bandara questioned. The Opposition MP noted that there should be a probe to find the source of funds for the hotel since the youngest Rajapaksa son had not even operated a ‘retail shop’. Bandara further alleged that the Government had spent millions of rupees to construct a carpeted access road for the hotel. Meanwhile, a group of members of the Aragalaya people’s protest last week lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) calling for a probe on the Eco Lodge’s ownership and the funds used to construct it.
