National Organiser of the All Ceylon Farmers Federation Namal Karunaratne made some scathing allegations surrounding the possible misappropriation of State funds amounting to Rs. 2.3 Mn at the State Ministry of Livestock, Farm Promotion and Dairy and Egg Related Industries, under the purview of State Minister D.B Herath. At a press conference held in Kurunegala yesterday (25), Karunaratne read from documents which he claimed to be the expenses allocated for the State Ministry. He went on to claim that Herath’s coordinating secretary had written to the Ministry secretary saying that the Minister wanted a variety of 48 items. “Six beds have been purchased. Rs. 465,000 rupees has been spent for six mattresses. Furniture worth Rs. 146, 900 has been purchased. A 40-inch TV, a 32-inch TV, an air conditioner and an automatic washing machine have also been purchased. A gas cooker has been purchased for Rs. 43,500. A blender, two 27 piece cutlery sets, a half door iron cupboard, a wooden rack and a study table have also been purchased,” he said. Karunaratne continued to list out several more household items which he alleges have also been purchased for the State Minister. “Basically everything except for his undergarments have been purchased using State funds. How is permission granted for this,” he asked.
