Rs. 5 billion more required for management of universities: PM’s Office

Additional funds worth Rs. 5 billion is required for the management of the physical and human resources of the universities due to the enrollment of a higher number of students, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Accordingly, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed to release additional funds to the university system in a phased manner in addition to the existing financial allocations for the education of university students.

The Prime Minister expressed these views at a discussion held with the University Grants Commission (UGC) representatives and Vice Chancellors of all Universities at Temple Trees on the provision of infrastructure for universities.

UGC Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga stated that 41,000 students have been enrolled in universities this year.

A total of 10,588 students have been enrolled in universities this year and this is the first time that so many students have been enrolled in universities.

Senior Professor Amaratunga stated that 479 students have been admitted to the medical faculties.

Education Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris who participated in the discussion stated that there is a need for a programme for the students who have not been able to enter into universities.
