Former State Minister Sanath Nishantha’s relative Jagath Samantha, who is a Local Government member of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), was last week arrested for assault and obstructing duties of the Police at a fuel station in the Arachchikattuwa area.
Video footage of Samanatha’s assault on a person who had visited a fuel station in Arachchikattuwa was telecasted on television and social media last week. The footage showed Samantha mercilessly assaulting a person who had arrived at the fuel station with a barrel for fuel.
The assaulted person had been admitted to hospital and in an interview with the media said that he was assaulted by Samantha claiming that he (the person) would not be sold fuel since he was a supporter of the United National Party (UNP). “I went to the fuel station after waiting for weeks to buy fuel. I was assaulted by Samantha, making various claims. I did not run or retaliate but he continued to assault me,” the person said.
Meanwhile, another SLPP politician in the Ukuwela Local Government body was arrested along with three others after they had allegedly broken into a residence and engaged in a robbery.
