Ruwan Wijewardene was elected as the United National Party's (UNP) Deputy Leader a short while ago.
The contest for the UNP Deputy Leadership was between Wijewardene and Ravi Karunanayake.
Wijewardene secured 28 votes while Karunanayake received 10 votes.
The UNP Working Committee met this evening to discuss and decide on the new leadership of the party.
The Working Committee today decided to appoint a new Deputy Leader for the party and the Deputy Leader would take over the party leadership by January next year.
