Sajith alleges CBSL forcibly converting foreign remittances

10 Dec 2021

Foreign remittances are forcibly being converted to Sri Lankan rupees, alleged Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa. "Despite the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) denying this, this is the true scenario. The workers who receive payment in foreign currencies are now having their accounts automatically changed to Rupee accounts," said Premadasa. During his speech, Premadasa added that the CBSL had taken measures to ensure that all remittances will be converted, whether permission is granted or not by the holder. " This is not done with permission, but done as a mandatory measure taken by the CBSL to bring in foreign currency into the country", " he added. Meanwhile, a few days ago, CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal took to a Twitter post to confirm that despite rumours being circulated on social media, foreign remit accounts have not been automatically converted to Sri Lankan Rupee accounts, and that people must not believe such rumours.
