SC extends interim order preventing implementation of death penalty
The Supreme Court today extended the interim order preventing the implementation of the death penalty until 20 March 2020.
When the case was taken up today(9), the judge bench ordered that all petitions be taken up on 17, 18 and 19 of March 2020.
President Maithripala Sirisena in June announced the end to the 43-year moratorium on the death penalty. He also signed papers authorizing the executions of four convicts.
Eleven Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions and a Writ petition were filed with the Supreme Court between June and July this year, against implementation of the death penalty.
On 5 July , the Supreme Court delivered an interim order preventing the implementation of the death penalty until 30 October.
The interim order was later extended to 10 December.
