Seven suspects were arrested with 29,000 kilograms of refuse tea in Katugoda, Seeduwa by the Special Task Police in Gonahena, stated Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana today.
"The arrested suspects were reportedly trying to export the refuse tea to a Middle East country illegally. However, the Special Task Force along with the Seeduwa Police was able to trace the tea and hand the suspects over to the Seeduwa Police, and they are expected to appear before the Negombo Magistrate's Court tomorrow," Rohana said.
Further, the officials of the Sri Lanka Tea Board is expected to visit the scene to assess the quality of the tea today. The Spokesman highlighted how tourists are interested in Sri Lankan tea and that the exportation of refuse tea might damage its reputation.
