09 Jul 2021

The Deputy Chairman of the Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha, a cardiologist and two other gem merchants who were remanded on suspicion of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl who was bought online have been released on strict bail by the Colombo Magistrate's Court. After considering the requests made by the suspects' lawyers, Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochani Abeywickrema said that it was not justifiable to keep the suspects in remand custody as the investigation was over. Accordingly, the Additional Magistrate ordered the suspects to be released on cash bail of Rs. 25,000 and two sureties of Rs. 2.5 million each. The Magistrate strongly warned the suspects that their bail would be revoked and they would be remanded until the end of the case if they received a complaint that they had engaged in such an act. The court also ordered that the case against the suspects be called back on August 19.
