Shifting Sirikotha?

16 Oct 2022

There’s much talk among the United National Party (UNP) these days, it is learnt, following a proposal by a former General Secretary of the party to shift the Party Headquarters – Sirikotha. The senior UNP official has proposed to Party Leader President Ranil Wickremesinghe that Sirikotha be shifted to a new location given that there seems to be some bad luck associated with the ground on which the premises is currently located in Kotte. The official is of the belief that shifting to another location will help the party once again record electoral victories. The official had further proposed to Wickremesinghe that the Headquarters could be shifted to a two-acre land in the Rajagiriya area adjacent to the Central Bank Institute. The President however had remained non-committal and said that an investor could be asked to develop a multi-storey building on the land and that the UNP could request about two floors to house the Party Headquarters. Interestingly, the land where Sirikotha is currently located had first belonged to a member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) until it was taken by the then UNP Leader and President J.R. Jayewardene, who constructed the Party Headquarters in the early 1980s. This fact was once revealed by the late Leader of the JVP, Somawansa Amarasinghe, during a public rally.
