Sinhala Ravaya writes to President

  • Seeks independent probe into NMRA data loss

BY Pamodi Waravita

Sinhala Ravaya Party Chairman Ven. Akmeemana Dayarathana Thera, in a letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday (25), has requested him to ensure that an independent investigation is carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the loss of data in the Lankan Government Cloud (LGC) server of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) in August this year.

“We request you to ensure that an independent investigation takes place concerning this incident. We further request that you put an end to the medicine mafia that is currently ongoing in the country, as it has made the Sri Lankan public dependent on medicines,” claimed the letter. The monk further claimed that the average Sri Lankan presently spends more on medicines than on food.

Reportedly, NMRA’s data on the LGC was erased by an employee of the private company that stored the data on behalf of the NMRA. It was reported on 22 August that the process of renewing the registration of medicinal drugs and equipment has been severely affected due to a loss of data of the LGC server of the NMRA. Print media had also reported that the NMRA is likely to grant blanket renewal for registered drugs that were awaiting fresh licences.

The reports added that at a meeting with the NMRA, pharmaceutical companies have allegedly been told that this was being considered an interim measure. Earlier this month, the bail application put forward by the software engineer of Epic Lanka Technologies, who was arrested in connection with the erasure of NMRA data, was rejected.
