Six districts hit by inclement weather

A total of 322 persons belonging to 81 families in the Ratnapura, Kegalle, Monaragala, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, and Puttalam districts, located in six provinces, have been affected due to inclement weather conditions in all parts of the country as of 6 a.m. yesterday (1), according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). According to the DMC, a total of 222 persons belonging to 81 families in 13 Divisional Secretariat (DS) Divisions in the said districts have been affected due to inclement weather conditions including heavy wind and rain, cutting failures, and lightning. Among them are 100 persons belonging to 26 families in the Ratnapura District, 109 persons belonging to 28 families in the Kegalle District, 70 persons belonging to 14 families in the Badulla District, 32 persons belonging to 10 families in the Anuradhapura District, four persons belonging to one family in the Trincomalee District, and seven persons belonging to two families in the Puttalam District. Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for a total of 31 DS Divisions in eight districts, given rainfalls exceeding 75 mm in many areas yesterday. Accordingly, the NBRO had issued level three (red) landslide warnings to the Palindanuwara DS Division in the Kalutara District, and the Ratnapura, Kuruvita, and Elapatha DS Divisions in the Ratnapura District. Level two (amber) landslide warnings have been issued to the Yakkalamulla, Nagoda, and Baddegama DS Divisions in the Galle District, the Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya, and Walallawita DS Divisions in the Kalutara District, the Deraniyagala, Dehiowita, Bulathkohupitiya, and Ruwanwella DS Divisions in the Kegalle District, and the Kalawana, Ayagama, Eheliyagoda, and Kahawaththa DS Divisions in the Ratnapura District. In addition, the NBRO has issued level one (yellow) landslide warnings to the Padukka and Seethawaka DS Divisions in the Colombo District, the Agalawatta, Dodangoda, Mathugama, and Horana DS Divisions in the Kalutara District, the Ududumbara DS Division in the Kandy District, the Yatiyantota DS Division in the Kegalle District, the Ambanganga Korale DS Division in the Matale District, the Ambagamuwa DS Division in the Nuwara Eliya District, and the Pelmadulla, Nivithigala, and Kiriella DS Divisions in the Ratnapura District. During the landslides’ early warning period, the NBRO advised the public to pay attention to the development of cracks on the ground and ground subsidence, the slanting of trees, cracks in the floors and walls of buildings built on slopes, and the sudden appearance of springs and emerging muddy water.
