SLPP denies public meetings/rallies, says it spoke to district-level leaders
By Pamodi WaravitaThe main Parliamentary Opposition Party, Samagi Jana Balawegeya (SJB) yesterday (28) claimed that the quarantine curfew lockdown status has been limited to “mere words”, with even political activities such as public meetings being conducted as usual by the governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Party.“Public life is functioning as usual, despite the quarantine curfew lockdown status that was implemented for this month. There are even more vehicles on the road today than on a normal day. Political activities are also being conducted by the SLPP,” SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna told a media briefing yesterday. He alleged that the SLPP has advised their organisers to hold public meetings, despite the quarantine regulations imposed by the health authorities.“Even last week, Wildlife and Forest Conservation Minister C.B. Rathnayake and Vehicle Regulation, Bus Transport Services and Train Compartments, Motor Car Industry, and Community Police Services State Minister Dilum Amunugama held a public meeting in Nuwara Eliya. This is a joke. How is this allowed to happen?” questioned Rajakaruna. When contacted by The Morning, SLPP General Secretary MP Sagara Kariyawasam noted that during the past couple of weeks, small scale discussions have been conducted with local SLPP political leaders in each district regarding the 2022 Budget to be presented soon and the related district-level requirements.“No public meetings or rallies have taken place. The SJB wants to keep the country closed so that necessary political activities cannot be conducted and people’s livelihoods are hindered,” he claimed.
