SJB calls for criminal inquiry into gas cylinder explosions

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has called for a criminal inquiry over the recent increase in gas explosions.

Speaking in Parliament today (30), SJB leader Sajith Premadasa listed out several places where such gas explosions have been recorded and stated that there is now a growing fear amongst the people.

“There is a growing fear amongst the public now, where no one is confident to use domestic gas anymore. There have been over 11 incidents within a span of 48 hours, and this is not to be taken lightly. We strongly believe that the gas cylinder compositions have been altered with and the weight has reduced as well. We request for an inquiry to be done in this matter,” said Premadasa.

He additionally mentioned that the alleged proportion of Butane and Propane which is now being filled into the gas cylinders is not compatible with the Sri Lankan climate.

“This is a fraud by the Government and a deception of the people, where the Government intends to make profits by introducing the 18-litre hybrid gas cylinders for domestic use, and all the gas cylinder explosions began right after the Government introduced the hybrid gas cylinders,” he accused.

Meanwhile, Leader of the House and Minister of Education Dinesh Gunawardena suggested that a discussion be held in regards to this matter and a Special Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting has been scheduled by the Speaker of the House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, for tomorrow morning at 09.00hrs.
