  • Ganesan to move P’ment for early Nov. debate on plantation Tamils plight
BY Mirudhula Thambiah Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition MP Mano Ganesan has requested President Ranil Wickremesinghe to establish a Presidential Task Force (PTF) to address issues faced by plantation-sector estate Tamils.  Speaking to The Morning, Ganesan said yesterday (27) that he had requested President Wickremesinghe to establish a PTF to look into issues faced by Tamils employed in plantations during the Deepavali celebrations held at the Presidential Secretariat early this week, adding that he would soon meet the President to discuss the matter further.  He also noted that he will also move a motion in Parliament on 2 November to further discuss the plight of plantation workers.  Meanwhile, during the Deepavali celebrations, Ganesan had also requested President Wickremesinghe to release more Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act (PTA) detainees and prisoners by at least the Thaipongal festival scheduled to be held in January 2023.  “I thanked the President for releasing eight PTA prisoners recently and noted that more should be released, as they’ve been detained for a long period of time, ranging from five to 20 years,” he added.
