SJB to hold protest despite several court orders barring it

Although the Sri Lanka Police has obtained several court orders to prevent the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) from staging mass protests today (16), the SJB has vowed to carry out the protest and demonstration as planned.

Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa said that orders against the protest have been obtained from Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court 5, Mahara Magistrate’s Court 1 and 2, the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, and the Homagama Magistrate’s Court.

However, the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court, the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court, and the Colombo Chief Magistrate have rejected the requests made by the Police seeking court orders preventing the protests organised by the SJB. It was reported that the Colombo Chief Magistrate rejected the request on the grounds that the exact location of the planned protest was unknown.

The Police had made the requests from the aforementioned courts, stating that the SJB had organised the said protest rallies without seeking the approval of the Director General of Health Services.

Earlier, the SJB said that it is not afraid of the Government’s suppressive efforts, and added that the people would join with the SJB today, as they have no alternative against the rising cost of living.
