SJB’s Wijesiri the first MP ejected from ninth P’ment

During a debate on the Local Government elections, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition MP Chaminda Wijesiri was temporarily suspended from the Parliamentary session after he allegedly attempted to verbally assault Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Government MP Nimal Lanza.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Leader of the House Dr. Susil Premajayantha, and other MPs urged Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana to ask Wijesiri to leave the Chamber following the latter’s verbal clash with Lanza.

“Speaker, I draw your attention to the conduct of Wijesiri. He rose from his seat and attempted to assault Lanza. Please, immediately refer this issue to the Disciplinary Committee of the Parliament. This Chamber is not for those who do not know how to conduct themselves. The Parliament has Standing Orders,” charged Premajayantha.

The Speaker then suspended Wijesiri from the session according to Standing Order 79.

Wijesiri’s name-calling of Premajayantha upon his return to the Chamber, received a strong rebuttal from the latter. This is the first instance of an MP being temporarily suspended from the Chamber in the ninth Parliament.
