SL 2nd in South Asia for child malnutrition: Rohini

07 Sep 2022

Sri Lanka has been ranked sixth in global child malnutrition rankings based on the number of underweight children under five years of age, and has been ranked second among  countries facing severe malnutrition in South Asia, stated Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kaviratne yesterday (6) in Parliament. The MP mentioned this while presenting the adjournment motion on the malnutrition of children and mothers in Sri Lanka. The MP stated that due to the economic crisis in the country, the price of food has become more and more unbearable day by day, and children under the age of five are the most affected by this situation. MP Kaviratne said that it has been reported in the past that not having appropriate weight for their height and not having appropriate height for their age is a common condition among Sri Lankan children under the age of five years, adding that if this situation continues, the health status of the children as well as their educational activities may be hindered. Therefore, considering this situation, the Government should immediately implement a formal programme to raise the nutritional condition of children, she urged, while submitting the adjournment motion.
