SL migrant workers | 50,000 awaiting repatriation

20 Oct 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The number of migrant workers waiting to be repatriated rose to 50,000, once again, in the last two weeks, The Morning learnt. Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) Deputy General Manager and Director of Media R.K.K.M.P. Randeniya told The Morning that there had been an increase in those seeking to return. “In the last two weeks, we saw more migrant workers registering to be repatriated. Earlier it went down to around 42,000, but during the last two weeks, we saw that number rise to around 50,000,” Randeniya said. He said the number of returnees per day has reduced drastically due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation in Sri Lanka. “Only around 10 to 20 people are coming daily now, as we have reduced numbers to make sure there is quarantine capacity to handle patients from the recent cluster,” he said.
