18 Mar 2022

The authorities of Cuba, Sri Lanka, Argentina, Venezuela and Kyrgyzstan have officially promised not to detain Russian aircraft, an informed source in the industry confirmed to Vestnik ATOR The Federal Air Transport Agency of Russia (Rosaviatsia) issued a statement among Russian carriers that there are no risks of aircraft arrest when flying to Cuba, Venezuela and Argentina. "According to the information received from the Russian embassies in foreign countries, there are no risks of detention, arrest, suspension of the operation of Russian aircraft and revocation of insurance policies when flying to Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina," an urgent communique from the deputy head of the Federal Air Transport Agency Vladimir Poteshkin to airlines was quoted on social networks. Earlier, a similar message was published regarding Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan, which were confirmed to ATOR Vestnik by a source close to the regulator. In addition, the document states that restrictions on the operation of flights by Russian airlines have not yet been introduced by the aviation authorities of Uzbekistan. The market characterises this news as "rather positive". However, at the same time, a number of representatives of the aviation industry note that the spread of such messages against the backdrop of an acute crisis in air transportation and the inability to fully use their fleets on foreign routes is currently not very useful in practice. Russian carriers do not rule out that flights to Cuba and Sri Lanka may indeed be operated in the future, but only after the issue of aircraft re-registration is resolved. "Now we are, first of all, working on re-registration of aircraft in the Russian register and are constantly negotiating with lessors about the future fate of the aircraft," says a representative of one of the Russian airlines.
