Sri Lanka has shown interest in bidding for at least two major International Cricket Council (ICC) events in the coming seven-year cycle, from 2024 to 2031.

“We have shown our interest in hosting two global events in the coming cycle. One is a T20 (men’s) World Cup and the other is a global qualification event for women,” a senior Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) official told The Morning Sports yesterday (15).

The ICC on 8 May and 1 June respectively announced the schedules of both women’s and men’s cricket tournaments which are to be held from year 2024 to 2031, while also indicating the world governing body’s interest to expand those competitions of both the genders.

Final decision next year

The above SLC official, though, did not specify the two competitions that they have shown interest in hosting.

After completing two T20 World Cups, in India in 2021 and in Australia in 2022, the ICC plans to have the same competition every other year; in 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030 with the participation of 20 countries.

SLC has shown interest in hosting one of those four events.

“The ICC had asked for EoIs (Expression of Interest) from its member countries to host events coming up in the next cycle. Then, once we have submitted our bids later on, an independent committee of the ICC will assess those bids in December this year and give their report on the final decisions next year,” the source further explained.

The ICC events in next cycle

In the women’s circuit, there will be World Cups (in 50 overs) in 2025 and 2029. There will be T20 World Cups too slated for 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030.

In addition, there is going to be two T20 Champions Trophy competitions too for women, scheduled for 2027 and 2031.

The World Cup and the T20 World Cup have both been expanded to consist of a maximum number of ten and 12 countries respectively. The women’s Champions Trophy will comprise six teams.

In the men’s segment, other than the expanded 20-team T20 World Cup and the 14-team 50-over World Cup, there will also be two Champions Trophy tournaments too, slated for years 2025 and 2029 for the participation of eight countries.

SLC last hosted event in 2012

Sri Lanka last hosted a major ICC global event in 2012, the T20 World Cup that year which the West Indies won beating the hosts in the final in Colombo. The event was considered a success on many counts.

Earlier, Sri Lanka hosted the Champions Trophy in 2002 and co-hosted the World Cup, the ICC flagship event, in 1996 and 2011.

Sri Lanka also hosted the 2012 women’s T20 World Cup too, beside its men’s event.

PCB to bid for five events

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shown its interest in bidding for five major events during the coming 2024-2031 cycle, the regional media news reports revealed last week.

Pakistan has reportedly held talks with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) to jointly host some of the ICC events that are coming up.

Pakistan had lost the right to host the 2009 Champions Trophy and co-hosting of the 2011 World Cup due to security concerns by participating nations. International cricket returned to Pakistan only in 2019 after nearly 10 years, following an attack by militants on the Sri Lankan team in March 2009.

Co-hosting

“Now the situation is different and teams are willing to tour Pakistan and we have revived Test matches in the country. New Zealand, England, and West Indies are lined up to tour this year, so things are looking bright,” a PCB source had been quoted as saying by The Times of India on 12 June.

Pakistan has not hosted an ICC global event since 1996, or for over 25 years. Sri Lanka hosted the 1996 World Cup with India and Pakistan before co-hosting the 2011 event along with both India and Bangladesh.
