SLFP Vice President Jeevan joins Welgama’s party

23 Feb 2022

  • Cites alleged ‘Kumaratunga phobia’ of SLFP leaders
  • Notes that Sirisena has not submitted solo Govt. forming plan
BY Buddhika Samaraweera  Vice President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and former Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga has decided to leave the SLFP and join the New Lanka Freedom Party (NLFP) led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama. Speaking to the media yesterday (22), he claimed that he had decided to resign from all the posts he held in the SLFP, as the “Kumaratunga phobia” of the SLFP leaders was increasing day by day. “I have submitted my resignation letter to the party. The main reason for this is that the ‘Kumaratunga fear’ of the SLFP leaders is increasing day-by-day. Even though I have been facing them with patience for so long, they do not seem to come to an end.”  Kumaratunga added: “I look forward to working with the NLFP in the future. A number of politicians including those from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the SJB have already discussed with us regarding the formation of a broader alliance. We invite all forces to join us.”  He further stated that SLFP Leaders, including its Chairman and incumbent SLPP Government MP and former President Maithiripala Sirisena have been following a double standard, sometimes criticising the present Government and sometimes praising the Government. He also stated that he did not think that the SLFP would be able to fulfil the expectations of the people and the party members by adopting such a policy. “At a time when the ‘Pancha Maha Balawegaya (Five Great Forces)’, that are the foundation of the SLFP are taking to the streets and struggling against the policies of the current Government, the SLFP leaders are working on a policy of running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. Although Sirisena told the media that it is hoped to form a SLFP-led Government, he has not submitted any such plan to the party’s Central Committee (CC),” claimed Kumaratunga.
