SLPP MP and 12 others granted bail

BY Buddhika Samaraweera A total of 13 suspects remanded in connection with the peaceful protestors being attacked in Colombo on 9 May, including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Milan Jayathilake, were released on bail, while four other suspects including SLPP MP Sanath Nishantha were further remanded by the Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (8). The suspects were produced before Chief Magistrate Gamage. Out of the suspects, 13 suspects, including Jayathilake, Sri Lanka Podujana Education Services Union President Wasantha Handapangoda, and Colombo Municipal Councillor Mahinda Kahandagama, were released on bail. The Chief Magistrate also announced that the case would be taken up again on 15 June and ordered to further remand four suspects including MP Nishantha until that day. The Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate earlier ordered the remand of 13 suspects including Nishantha, Jayathilake, Kahandagama, and Handapangoda, who were remanded until yesterday in connection with peaceful protestors being attacked by a group of SLPP supporters in Colombo on 9 May. A group of SLPP supporters, who had come to meet the former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had attacked the “MynaGoGama” and “GotaGoGama” protest sites in front of Temple Trees in Kollupitiya and at Galle Face Green, respectively, on 9 May. Following the attacks, tense situations erupted in several parts of the country. Furthermore, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had, on 17 May, informed the Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena that it intended to record statements from seven MPs in connection with the investigation into the attacks. Out of the said MPs, Nishantha and Jayathilake were arrested by the CID on 17 May. They were then produced before Chief Magistrate Gamage from time to time.
