05 Oct 2022

  • Athletes  can appeal within 7 days regarding the injustices done by the selection committee of their association says Minister Roshan Ranasinghe
Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe handed out appointments to the new members of the National Sports Selection Committee yesterday (4). Speaking at the occasion, the Minister said: “It was my understanding that this responsibility should be entrusted to a team that has practical knowledge about sports, loves sports, and is attentive towards sports. This committee fulfils one of the most important responsibilities of sports. The future of the young aspiring sportsman or woman will depend on the decision of this committee.  “In the past, we have had the experience of athletes having many complaints. For every mother and father, their child is the hero; logic does not factor into this way of thinking. It is the responsibility of the National Sports Selection Committee to measure their performance and investigate if there is any injustice that has taken place against any athlete.” He further added: “The National Sports Selection Committee intervened and did justice to some problems in the selection of the netball team in recent days. Their right choices are reflected in Sri Lanka winning the Asian title. If any injustice was done to any athlete by the selection committee, they can submit their appeal to me as the Minister or to the National Sports Council or National Sports Selection Committee within seven days. Justice can be expected through the National Sports Selection Committee.”   The newly appointed National Sports Selection Committee Chief of Defence Gen. Shavendra Silva (Chairman), Arjun Rishya Fernando (Secretary), Dr. Mahiya Gunasekara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Thilaka Jinadasa, National Olympic Committee Secretary Maxwell De Silva, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs Additional Secretary Prasanna Chanjith
