For the first time in the export history of the country, Sri Lanka has been able to export coco peat to Kenya.
Although the two countries have enjoyed more than 50 years of friendship and co-operation, the two countries have not fully realised the true potential of trade relations between the two countries.
Accordingly, the visit to Kenya carried out by Namal Rajapaksa as the Minister of Youth and Sports, Minister of Development Co-ordination and Monitoring, and State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development, in October 2021, has accelerated efforts to enhance economic activity between Sri Lanka and Kenya.
The agricultural sector of Kenya uses coco peat for its soil preparation. This coco peat was prepared in Sri Lanka and is of a higher quality than the product they (Kenyans) currently use. With regard to coir, Kenya has a total annual import capacity of 10,000 metric tonnes, which guarantees the sustainable export potential of this aforesaid product from Sri Lanka to Kenya.
Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Kenya Veluppillai Kananathan accompanied Minister Rajapaksa on the occasion of the release of the first consignment of coco peat that is to be exported to Kenya from the Port of Colombo.
Meanwhile in Sri Lanka, High Commissioner Kananathan met with several exporters to explore the potential for new products that could be exported to Kenya.
