28 Jan 2021

Sri Lanka has been ranked tenth in the world for performing well in terms of handling the COVID-19 pandemic, a Covid Performance Index compiled by the Australian think tank the Lowy Institute said. According to ABC news, the analysis has found that New Zealand has handled the coronavirus pandemic more effectively than any other country in the world. While New Zealand took top spot, it was closely followed by Vietnam, Taiwan and Thailand, which were ranked second, third and fourth, respectively. Australia also performed strongly and was ranked eighth in the world by the Lowy Institute. The top 10 countries are: 1.  New Zealand 2. Vietnam 3. Taiwan 4. Thailand 5. Cyprus 6. Rwanda 7. Iceland 8. Australia 9. Latvia 10. Sri Lanka The United States has been ravaged by the pandemic and languishes near the bottom of the table, at number 94. Indonesia and India did not perform much better, sitting at numbers 85 and 86, respectively. The institute has not rated China's response to the pandemic, citing a lack of publicly available testing data. In total, 98 countries were evaluated in this Interactive in the 36 weeks that followed their hundredth confirmed case of COVID-19, using data available to 9 January 2021. Data has been extracted from the Our World in Data series, which is maintained by researchers at the University of Oxford and the non-for-profit Global Change Data Lab.
