Sri Lanka to be developed as regional aviation hub: Tourism Minister

Prasanna Ranatunga, Minister of Tourism says that the government is taking steps to develop Sri Lanka as a regional aviation hub.

The Minister emphasized that the Government intends to improve the frequency of flights that were halted with the Covid pandemic. He was speaking at the inauguration of the new Ministry of Aviation and Export Processing Zone Development on the occasion of the New Year. He stressed that it could take several years for the aviation industry, which had collapsed due to the present pandemic, to recover. "Tourism as well as aviation are the industries most severely affected by the Covid pandemic. The present government has already initiated a number of programs to develop this sector and accordingly the government has given its full attention to the development of Katunayake, Mattala, Ratmalana, Jaffna and Batticaloa airports," he said. Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Airports and Export Processing Zone Development DV Chanaka said that despite the pandemic, the development work of the airports continued to be active.
