Standing independent in P’ment is a new fashion: Sumanthiran

08 Jun 2022

Standing independently in Parliament has become a new fashion in parliament and parliamentary law is not being followed anymore, says Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP M A Sumanthiran. He made this statement while speaking in Parliament a short while ago today (08). "This has become the new trend and fashion. The reason why there is an aisle between the two sides in Parliament is for the Government and Opposition to be seated on either side. We must acknowledge the fact that there is no parliamentary law anymore and we should be ashamed. Parliamentarians suddenly decide and announce in Parliament that they will be seated independently, and the fact now remains that the government has lost its majority," said Sumanthiran. He further noted that in the history of Sri Lanka, no single seat MP has been appointed as the Prime Minister. "The PM was appointed so that it covers up the faults of the Government. In the history of Sri Lanka, we have never had a PM who only has a single seat in Parliament and has been appointed as Prime Minister. Everyone talks about the 19th amendment, but with each passing day, we are wasting time. People expect answers, and by delaying such important matters, we are only wasting time to come up with solutions," he further mentioned. Sumanthiran concluded by saying that the relief budget would be welcome, but the details of it is yet to be seen.
