  • A treat to take you down memory lane
Do you remember your grandmothers’ special cuisines? Do you remember the love they put into making any mouth-watering recipe? This week on “Voice Unheard”, The Sunday Morning Brunch is taking you down memory lane. It’s a fruit that can be roasted, baked, fried, or boiled and gives the most authentic flavour – it’s none other than del, or breadfruit. Breadfruit has been heard by us all Sri Lankans, but it being fried and tossed in sugar takes us on a rollercoaster of memories. Mother-daughter duo Zihara Nikar and Fauzuna Razik Nikar re-introduces this special treat to us through Sugar n Spice Fix. My mom made it for an evening snack one day and that day has been the inception of Sugar n Spice Fix,” said Zihara, who is a mom, educator, and an ardent cricket fan. Sugar n Spice Fix offers a variety of breadfruit chips in the flavours of treacle-coated, sugar-coated, spicy, salted, and plain breadfruit chips. “We first introduced only the ‘treacle-coated breadfruit chips’ and that was a hit among our customers. We later introduced other flavours, and I feel that sugar-coated and spicy breadfruit chips have an equal response as well,” she added. The treacle-coated breadfruit chips are definitely a must-try, with the homemade treacle melting in your mouth as the chips crunch. The strong cardamom aroma that slides through takes you completely back to old times. The sugar-coated breadfruit chips prove authenticity. The chips are evenly tossed in sugar and could surely make any Sri Lankan grandmother proud. It is crispy as ever and the chips will vanish in no time. This dish beats originality in its own style. The spicy flavour, nevertheless, is the most creative one. It is the all-new substitute for murukku. It is chilli and salty and owns your movie night. Zihara said: “These are all fried to perfection according to each flavour. We add a hint of cardamom for the treacle and sugar coated to give it a divine smell. However, we don’t add cardamom if requested by the customer. “Spicy, salted, and plain breadfruit chips are a perfect snack-time munchie which would draw a close resemblance to cassava chips, only with a slightly chewy texture. “Through this venture, I have realised that I can get overwhelmed when work gets busier than usual. Kudos to my husband for being there as always to overcome these challenges as I step out of my comfort zone. This whole concept was unique despite the time-consuming procedure, and so we embarked on it. I am looking at promoting our service in an interesting and eye-catching way that would appeal to more customers. My mom is an amazing cook and she is my biggest inspiration. I’d be glad if I turn out to be at least half the person she is.” She added: “As of now, we are taking it step by step. Understanding that we are in the key stages of inception yet, we are looking at bigger plans with time. Words of gratification are all I can think of right now. We promise to express this gratitude by ensuring quality and variety in the future. Once again, a big thank you to all of you. As we keep you going with your favourites, you keep us going with your much-valued feedback. “There is no easy way out, but what keeps us going is the overwhelming response. A thought of seeing how far it would reach us has now got us smiling with gratitude. A very big thank you to all those who have supported us throughout. With the will of Almighty, we are here looking far ahead. Stick around for more and more from us, with God’s grace!” All in all, Sugar n Spice Fix will own your movie time, tea time, and even dessert time in no time.
